In-form Newcastle striker Marko Jesic is keen to add to his growing goal tally when the Jets take on the Central Coast Mariners in Wednesday night’s F3 derby at EnergyAustralia Stadium.
Jesic has netted three goals in the past two games to become the focal point of Newcastle’s mid-season revival and said he would love nothing more than to bag another in the derby clash against arch rivals The Mariners.
“I’m never happy with one goal. I want more, each game I want more and more,” Jesic said.
“I am just like any striker – they just want to keep scoring goals. I should have had a couple of goals against Wellington but it’s not the end of the world.”
“I will look to the next game (against the Mariners) and hopefully get another one.”
The 21-year-old has long been touted as a potential superstar but three consecutive knee injuries have hampered his career as has playing ‘out of position’.
In most of his starts for the Jets the 21-year-old has played on the right wing. But under Branko Culina’s new formation Jesic is up front at the point of the attack and the result is paying dividends.
“Ever since a young player my preferred position was to be a striker,” Jesic said. “Of course, to get on the field it doesn’t really matter where you play as long as you play.”
“Being out for 18 just to get back on the field is a privilege of mine and to start playing well again is great.”
In addition, Jesic has also paid tribute to new team-mate, former England international Francis Jeffers, who has not only served up some sublime passes for Jesic to fire on goal but has taken him under his wing with advice and tutelage.
“I’ve been playing striker with Franny (Francis Jeffers) up front the last couple of games and it has worked out well so far,” said Jesic.
“It is just the experience it brings to the whole team. He is someone who’s played the English Premier League, someone that you idolise, and to play alongside him is fantastic for me.”
“Just the experience he brings and just the feedback he gives to the boys especially the young ones like myself and Sean Rooney, who play up front. To get that feedback from him and what to do and what to do in certain situations is great, so just to keep learning from him each day.”
