Jeonbuk coach confident ahead of ACL return leg

Jeonbuk Motors coach Choi Kang-hee claimed Leonardo’s stunning free-kick against Melbourne Victory was “normal” for the Brazilian winger.

After Besart Berisha gave the hosts an early lead at AAMI Park, Leonardo struck back in the 13th minute, taking advantage of Matthieu Delpierre’s foul on Han Kyo-won.

From the edge of the penalty area, Leonardo expertly curled the ball over Victory’s wall, leaving goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas stranded.

It was a top-class goal that stunned the home crowd and secured a 1-1 draw for the visitors but Choi was not surprised after the game.

“I often see his free-kicks in training, so it was like normal for him,” Jeonbuk’s boss said at his post-match press conference.

“The goal leads us to have an advantage at our home, so that is the most important thing.”

The two-time reigning K League champions will host the Round of 16 second leg on May 24 knowing a clean sheet will be enough to take them to the quarter-finals.

“We did pretty well in this match, so we can try new tactics at our home,” Choi said.

“I think the home game is a big advantage.”
