AUSTIN ON PLAYING WITH VAN DIJK AND MANE… ‘THE INTENSITY MAKES YOU BETTER…’
Head coach: Warren Moon
Stadium: Suncorp Stadium/Moreton Daily Stadium
2021-22 position: 11th
It was a difficult season for the Roar, who finished second from bottom – 13 points adrift of the top six.
Commentator’s call:
Simon Hill
Roar feel a bit like a club in transition still and I think on the pitch there are two key questions. Last season they struggled for goals, so can Charlie Austin and Riku Danzaki provide those goals?
“At the other end of the pitch, in the Australia cup they played NPL opposition three times now and conceded six goals. The key is keeping Tom Aldred fit as the linchpin of their defense, and they have repatriated Jordan Courtney-Perkins as well, he’ll be better for having played in Poland.
“Those are the two big questions. And of course, whether they’ll keep patience with Warren Moon.”
Ex-player’s view
Roy O’Donovan
“Bringing in Charlie Austin for Juan Lescano is a major upgrade, and I love the confidence that Charlie brings to the league as a proven Premier League goalscorer.
“But I hope he can be a little bit selfish and stick to the dangerous areas, in other words stay in the penalty box and not go hunting for the ball.
Let the youth of Henry Hore, the speed of Nikola Mileusnic and the vision of Jay O’Shea do his running for him, create the opportunities that Charlie can finish off. If so, Roar could have a solid season.
