Reds blow: Skipper Isaias leaves Adelaide United

Adelaide United have announced the departure of Championship-winning midfielder Isaias after nearly six years of service.

Isaias quickly became one of the most consistent midfielders in the competition following his arrival in Adelaide in 2013, and has been a pillar of the club’s successes over the past decade.

He started 157 of his 158 appearances for the Reds in the Hyundai A-League, winning the Premiership and Championship double in 2015/16 – earning Joe Marston Medal honours in the 2016 Grand Final victory over Western Sydney Wanderers.

The Spaniard also won the FFA Cup twice (2014, 2018) and was voted Adelaide’s Player of the Season four times over the course of six seasons (2013/14, 2016/17, 2017/18 and 2018/19).

“This was a very difficult decision for me to make, but one that I have made for the benefit of my family,” Isaias said.

“Even though the club expressed its desire to keep me in Adelaide, they have been very understanding and I am very thankful to them for this.

“Coming to Adelaide was an amazing opportunity for me and I will always be grateful for the wonderful things that have happened to me while I’ve been here.

“I will always be an Adelaide United fan and will always have a special place in my heart for this club.”

Isaias – formerly of La Liga outfit Espanyol – succeeded former Reds’ legend Eugene Galekovic as club captain in September 2017, and became an Australian citizen earlier this January.

Adelaide United Chairman Piet van der Pol said: “Isaías has been a tremendous servant and ambassador to this club since he arrived.

“When he informed us of an opportunity elsewhere, we had already begun discussions with him about his future. However, we did not want to stand in the way of one of the longest-serving players in securing such a beneficial move.

“On behalf of all Adelaide United supporters, I’d like wish Isaìas and his family all the best for their future. They will always be welcomed back here with the Reds with open arms.”
