Organisers of the International Champions Cup claim the tournament could expand to include Australia in 2015.
Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, AC Milan, Juventus and Inter Milan have also taken part, among others.
According to Charlie Stillitano, the chief executive of organisers Relevent Sports, the event could be widened in the future to include matches in Australia.
“In the U.S. we will not go above eight teams but we have opened up a sister company in Asia and the Guinness International Champions Cup will expand next year, most likely to Australia and China,” Stillitano told Reuters.
“It will be played in the same time, simultaneously, as the tournament in the U.S.
“The idea for the future is to perhaps have the winners of Asia to face the winners of the U.S. tournament in September in Europe, perhaps at one of the team’s venues.”
A huge crowd of 109,000 supporters watched a game between Madrid and United in Michigan last weekend.
An appetite in Australia for visits by major clubs was demonstrated last year, when sell-out crowds watched Liverpool play Melbourne Victory at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Foxtel A-League All Stars take on United at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium.
A report in the Australian Financial Review earlier this year claimed the Nine Entertainment Co was involved in talks to bring the International Champions Cup to Australia.
