Bernie Ibini says playing against a player like Patrice Evra was a thrill, made even more special by the Juventus manager positive impressions of the Sydney FC striker.
Ibini played on the right side of a three-man attack in coach Josep Gombau’s 4-3-3. Also in attack were Besart Berisha and Alex Del Piero.
“We knew about Del Piero of course but (Besart) Berisha played very well and (Bernie Ibini) played very well also,” Juventus’ Italian coach Massimiliano Allegri said after the game.
“This is the first I heard about it but very happy to hear that,” the Sydney FC striker told www.a-league.com.au.
“I was just going out to play my normal game and I’m glad I impressed him.”
Not only did Ibini cause problems down Juve’s left but the former Mariner had to contend with new Juventus signing Patrice Evra.
The Frenchman is generally regarded as one of the best left backs in Europe, so to have shone against such an opponent is particularly pleasing.
“Growing up watching him play for Manchester United, now to be play against him was very special,” said Ibini.
“I guess playing at that high level [for Juventus] you have to have that physicality and I’m just happy to experience that.”
Ibini also paid tribute to coach Josep Gombau. The Reds boss has impressed many onlookers this past 10 days.
“The tactics were spot on. The coach did very well bringing us together and the players followed what the coach said and we took that out onto the field and that showed.
“We should’ve got a win but against these big teams, if you don’t take your chances they punish you,” said Ibini.
“We are disappointed but at the same time very happy.”
