‘I want to better it’: Le Fondre out to break Bobo’s goals record

At Sydney FC, Adam Le Fondre has big shoes to fill.

And while the English import is a different sort of player to the man he replaced, Bobo, he is still leading the line up front and expected to score regularly for the Sky Blues.

Bobo bagged an incredible 27 goals in 28 Hyundai A-League fixtures in the 2017/18 Season, setting a new league record thanks to his sharp finishing and predatory instincts around goal.

Le Fondre has started his Sydney FC career with a bang, though, scoring four goals in three Hyundai A-League matches, and he has revealed that he has set himself a lofty goal.

“I know how many he scored last season, yeah,” Le Fondre told reporters.

“When I came [here], I obviously researched the team … what the striker did last season … looking what I have to achieve.

“It didn’t faze me, the fact that he scored that many goals.

“I look forward to it – it’s a challenge … I don’t want to match it. I want to better it.

“I don’t want to be the same [as Bobo], of course.”

Le Fondre said the ambitious goal was just one thing he is using to try and give himself “the edge” on his Hyundai A-League rivals.

“I’m a striker – I score goals,” he said.

“I look for things to push me on and try and give me the edge.

“I know it’s a massive ask because of the amount of games you play but I’m not worried about it, no. I think I’ll give it a good go.”

Asked if he had felt any pressure replacing Bobo, Le Fondre added: “Not particularly – only the pressure I apply to myself.

“I’ve always had that in my career – to have very high standards and maintain them. As long as they don’t dip, I know what I do on the pitch won’t change.”

Le Fondre’s record of scoring in every competitive match he has played at Sydney FC will be put to the test when the in-form Sky Blues travel to Newcastle on Saturday night.

The Jets – Grand Finalists last season – remain winless and for that reason, Sydney FC coach Steve Corica is expecting a fast start from the hosts.

“They have had a slow start and I think we need to be ready for that,” he said

“They’ll come out all guns blazing, we need to be ready for that, especially the first 10, 15 minutes. We know that, we expect that.

“We need to be prepared and ready for what they are going to throw at us but at the end of the day, it’s all about us and what we want to achieve.

“We want to improve from last week and for us to do that, we need to play our game and play to what we believe in.”
