‘I had to try and redeem myself’ – Reds ace Condon relived after winner makes up for miss

Adelaide United star Emily Condon admits she breathed a sigh of relief when her 74th-minute header hit the back of the Perth Glory net.

Condon’s far-post finish earned the Reds a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish, only five days after she netted the winner from the penalty spot against Glory in the City of Churches.

After Fiona Worts scored her first Westfield W-League goal to put Adelaide ahead, Condon should have doubled the lead after going around goalkeeper Lily Alfeld but she missed an empty goal and skewed her shot into the side netting.

Caitlin Doeglas’ equaliser made the Reds worked harder for claim back-to-back victories against the Western Australians, but Condon ensured she went from zero to hero to lead Adrian Stenta’s team to secure all three points.

“I’m so thankful we got that winner,” Condon told FOX Sports. “I missed that sitter in the first half so I had to try and redeem myself, which I did.

“I’m just really happy with the overall team performance and just really happen to get the win.”

Condon paid tribute to the service provided by American forward Mallory Weber, who delivered an inch-perfect cross to find the long-time Red lurking at the back post.

“That was a pretty good ball,” she added. “It was too my head, on a platter, so all I had to do was make the connection and it went in.”

“I am used to the ball at my feet but, you know, if it’s on a platter, then the head can get it in.”

Condon was Perth’s chief tormentor on a baking-hot afternoon in Western Australia and the Reds star believes confidence is running high following a second straight win.

“It felt like we did have a lot of space, obviously you just to be aware of the defenders around you,” Condon said.

“Having the space gives you the confidence to drive forward and take players on which I felt, even in the second half, I felt confident driving forward and taking on players.”
