As we edge towards the end of the year, we continue our look back at the 10 best Hyundai A-League matches of 2017.
Today we hit number 6 on our countdown with a five-goal thriller in Gosford, as a Bruno Fornaroli inspired Melbourne City edged Central Coast in Round 22 of the 2016/17 season.
In a frenetic opening, City star Bruno Fornaroli put the visitors ahead with a sublime free kick which left Paul Izzo bamboozled in the Mariners goal.
And less than 10 minutes later City doubled their advantage, with Mariners skipper Nick Montgomery inadvertently putting the ball into his own net.
But the hosts regathered and pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time, with Fabio Ferreira’s deflected strike from distance leaving City keeper Thomas Sorensen with no chance.
And incredibly, Central Coast levelled proceedings just after the restart with City’s Ruon Tongyik bundling the ball past his own goalkeeper.
But a horror error from Paul Izzo gifted City the equaliser just past the hour mark, with the Mariners keeper shown a straight red after pulling down Bruno Fornaroli inside the area.
Fornaroli duly converted from the spot to hand City a 3-2 advantage.
A 10-man Mariners fought bravely for an equaliser with Josh Bingham going closest in the final 10 minutes, but it wasn’t to be as City held on for a memorable win..
