Here it is! We’ve reached number 1 in the greatest games of 2017. And this was an absolute beauty between Perth Glory and Melbourne City in the final regular season game of the 2016/17 Season.
There was extra incentive for Glory ahead of the match at nib Stadium, needing a four-goal win to leapfrog City and book a home Elimination Final the following week.
And in front of over 12,000 exhilarated fans, they almost pulled it off in one of the best games in Hyundai A-League history.
Glory began like a steam train, hitting the net in the first five minutes before Tim Cahill restored parity.
Andy Keogh and Chris Harold extended the lead to 3-1 early in the second half as Glory fans urged on their team to score two more.
They got one after Nebo Marinkovic’s first touch was to slam home a trademark set piece to make it 4-1.
But Cahill – with his second soon after – effectively ended Glory’s brave effort and Nico Colazo iced the cake.
But Glory weren’t finished hitting back with another goal before a brain fade from keeper Liam Reddy let City back into it at 5-4.
What a crazy Sunday afternoon in the west and a deserved winner of our best game on 2017!
