The versatile Ritchie de Laet played in a multitude of roles during his loan spell at Melbourne City from Aston Villa, but the Belgian is a firm nomination for right-back here.
No other defender came close to matching de Laet’s seven goals, although Matthew Millar’s eight assists for Central Coast Mariners (now of Newcastle Jets) made him, like De Laet, an enterprising watch in 2018/19.
However, Rhyan Grant’s continued brilliance for Championship winners Sydney FC make him a big favourite to slot in at the right side of defence, with Melbourne Victory’s NAB Young Footballer of the Year nominee Thomas Deng, Perth Glory’s evergreen Ivan Franjic and Wellington Phoenix’s Louis Fenton also strong contenders.
Vote for your right-back of the year in the poll below. Each player must have played at least 15 games.
