Goalkeeper: Eugene Galekovic – The man they call “The Cat” (well, no one calls him that apart from The Scout) was at his lightning-fast best against Brisbane on Sunday. That reflex save to deny Erik Paartalu was the stuff dreams are made of – if you dreams are of tall men wearing massive gloves. And The Scout dreams of Eugene every night.
Defender: Aziz Behich – Melbourne Heart might not be at their best at their moment but the reliable left-back continues to push his claims as arguably the finest in the league, even supplying the deep cross that gave Josip Tadic the chance to score the Melbourne-s side only goal against Wanderers. Think a national team call-up is too far? Got any other ideas…?
Defender: Josh Mitchell – The young Jets centreback had a bit of a roller-coaster against Perth but who doesn-t like roller-coasters? Wusses and Nannas, that-s who – and Josh Mitchell is neither of them. He put a towel over big Billy Mehmet and even got on the scoresheet. The Scout like.
Defender: Trent Sainsbury – What, Saino again? He cannot be denied! The young Mariners defender put in yet another classy performance an admittedly shambolic Sydney FC. Of course it helps when you-ve got someone like big Pat Zwaanswijk on your shoulder but that shouldn-t take away from the 20-year-old-s stellar start to the season.
Defender: Mark Milligan – Melbourne Victory are a different team with the Qantas Socceroo patrolling the deep midfield like a hungry dog outside a butcher-s. He snaffles up loose balls like sausages and scarpers upfield to share his spoils with the rest of his pack. Postecoglou-s most important man after Flores?
Midfielder: Aaron Mooy – The milky midfield maestro again pulled the strings for the Wanderers and overshadowed some of his more experienced teammates. It was Mooy-s vision that allowed Mark Bridge to slot the Wanderers first-ever home goal, and he was a threat on goal himself and had an absolute rocket saved by Clint Bolton. Mooy for the Socceroos! Yeah, throw him into action Holger, the kid is ready!
Midfielder: Tommy Rogic – The Mariners midfielder had possibly his best game for the club, buzzing around the midfield and final third like a particularly annoying fly in Sydney FC-s unappealing ointment. Energetic, creative and direct, he exploited the gaps between the lines and must have done enough to be pencilled into Holger-s little black book.
Midfielder: Gui Finkler – The Brazilian midfielder has clearly had problems adapting to the A-League but we got some glimpses of what he-s capable of against Wellington. That long ball to Archie Thompson for Victory first goal; the brilliant inter-play with Flores for the fantastic second. For an hour he was pulling the strings in midfield and the league saw just what Postecoglou has in store.
Midfielder: James Virgili – Another excellent attacking performance from the flying Jet. Didn-t get on the scoresheet but he was such a pain in the neck, the Glory defence will be off to see a chiropractor this week. Forget all the tiki-taka – it-s so good to see a player running at the opposition.
Attacker: Marcos Flores – The “false 9” Argentine finally looked back to his best against the Phoenix, confusing them with his skill, unlocking them with his vision and tickling the back of their net with that cheeky pivoted clip off the outside of his boot. He-s alright, this fella – might have a future in this game.
Attacker: Danny McBreen – Good old Danny McBreen. Just when you think he should be pushing out the half-time oranges, up he pops with a determined hat-trick that shows the Sydney defence what hard work really means. A true team player.
