Who starred for their clubs in Round 3? We’ve crunched the Opta data to pick the best performing players of the weekend.
Based on a range of metrics provided by the Hyundai A-League’s official data provider, here’s the Team of the Week for Round 3.
GOALKEEPER
Eugene Galekovic (Melbourne City) – The veteran shot-stopper was excellent in City’s win over Phoenix, keeping a clean sheet and making two saves in the 1-0 win. Galekovic has the highest save percentage of any keeper in the league this season (80%).
DEFENDERS
Tom Doyle (Wellington Phoenix) – The left-back got through a mountain of work against City and won an impressive 86% of his duels.
Scott Neville (Perth Glory) – The tireless fullback recorded a remarkable nine clearances against the Mariners, the most of any player in Round 3.
Rhys Williams (Melbourne Victory) – The versatile central-defender made two blocks and a game-high four tackles against the Reds in his side’s 2-2 draw at Adelaide Oval.
Josh Risdon (Western Sydney Wanderers) – The Caltex Socceroo got forward at will against Sydney and claimed a crucial assist for Oriol Riera’s opener. The fullback also logged more touches than any other defender in Round 3 (83).
MIDFIELDERS
Diego Castro (Perth Glory) – Created three chances against the Mariners, attempted eight crosses and had an 85% pass completion rate in the attacking half.
Mark Milligan (Melbourne Victory) – The Socceroo bossed the midfield against the Reds and drew more fouls from opposition players than anybody else during Round 3 (seven).
Michael McGlinchey (Wellington Phoenix) – The creative Kiwi midfielder caused City all sorts of problems on the weekend, fashioning a round-high six chances for his side.
Dimitri Petratos (Newcastle Jets) – The winger netted a cracking long-range strike in Newcastle’s 2-1 win over the Roar. He also contributed eight crosses as the Jets maintained their unbeaten start to the season.
STRIKERS
Besart Berisha (Melbourne Victory) – Netted his first goal of the season in his side’s 2-2 draw with Adelaide United. Scored with his first shot of the game to make it four straight matches in which he’s scored against the Reds.
Andy Keogh (Perth Glory) – Also netted his first goal of the season and was involved in five aerial duels against the Mariners – no player recorded more in that game.
