Hyundai A-League marquees of the past: Brian Deane

When the Hyundai A-League kicked off in 2005, Perth Glory pulled off a coup by signing big English striker Brian Deane – the man who scored the first ever English Premier League goal – as their marquee.

But sadly, it didn’t quite work out in WA. 

And it still rankles the likeable Yorkshireman that he wasn’t able to shine like he had throughout his career in England and also with Benfica in Portugal. 

Now 48, the former target man opened up to Gareth Morgan @gmorgan73 of www.perthglory.com.au  about his brief spell in WA and the Hyundai A-League.

The one-time England international discusses why he was lured to Australia, his former coach at Glory Steve McMahon and his current managerial ambitions.

“In reality, mistakes were made on both sides. I don’t regret going there, though,” he says of his move to Glory in 2005. 

“I knew Dwight Yorke was going to be out there and that there was this thing about marquee players…”
