Hyundai A-League goal of the round: Topor-Stanley’s header

Newcastle Jets defender Nikolai Topor-Stanley doesn’t score many but his early header against Melbourne City last Thursday has taken out the Round 16 Hyundai A-League goal of the week.

In a vote by Hyundai A-League fans, Topor-Stanley’s pinpoint, looping finish opened the scoring at AAMI Park, with the Jets eventually coming away with a 2-2 draw.

The central defender’s moment of magic came after great skill from playmaker Patricio Rodriguez, who twisted past his defender before floating a sublime ball into the box.

And Topor-Stanley did the rest, expertly heading the ball beyond a stranded Dean Bouzanis.

The goal picked up 44.6% of the fan vote to just edge out Perth Glory star Diego Castro’s stunning free-kick against the Wanderers, which received 39.8% of the vote.

Mariners striker Blake Powell was third (15.6%) for his skilful stepover and finish in the 2-1 loss to Brisbane Roar.
