Thanks to Opta, we break down two players – Tim Cahill and Diego Castro – likely to be among the biggest scorers when it comes to Hyundai A-League Fantasy in 2016/17.
But who should you pick for your fantasy team?
Melbourne City recruit Cahill is making his Hyundai A-League Fantasy debut and at $500,000 is reasonably priced for a player who should be a regular scorer this season.
The 36-year-old has been a consistent scorer right throughout his career, from his eight seasons at Everton in the EPL to his stints in the MLS and China.
And the Caltex Socceroo has showed no signs of slowing down.
Cahill’s strike-rate over the last four years has been as prolific as it has at any stage of his career, scoring 30 times in 90 games at New Yor Red Bulls, Shanghai Shenhua and Hangzhou.
That’s a goal every three games. Pretty impressive!
His shooting accuracy always hovers around the 50% mark which would be among the best in the Hyundai A-League, while his passing always hovers around the 75-80% mark.
If you’re looking for a penalty-area poacher then Cahill is certainly your main.
Of the 70 goals he has scored in club football over the last decade, all but two have been from inside the box.
Not surprisingly, more than 50% (38 out of 70) have been with his head – underlining his aerial prowess – while almost 30% come in the final 15 minutes of a match.
On the other side of the coin is last season’s Johnny Warren Medallist Castro.
The Spaniard took the Hyundai A-League by storm last season, which translated into big points in fantasy land.
Castro – who will cost you a cool $550,000 – was the third highest point scorer in 2015/16, finishing with 154 points.
That’s at an excellent average of 6.2 points per match, thanks largely to his 13 goals and four assists.
Castro is Perth Glory’s main creator in the front third which should transfer to big points when it comes to his fantasy prospects.
While playing in a different position to Cahill, Castro has been a consistent attacking force throughout his career in Spain.
In the seven seasons before he joined Glory, the now 34-year-old scored 43 goals in 224 appearances for Getafe and Sporting Gijon.
But significantly, he also provided 23 assists and often had a shooting accuracy in excess of 50%.
So the pair both look like good options when picking your fantasy team.
