Hyundai A-League Team of the Season
Corona (Brisbane Roar)
The Spanish veteran became the fulcrum of Roar’s midfield and caught the eye with his excellent passing range, composure and deadly set-piece delivery.
The 35-year-old proved a smart addition to John Aloisi’s side, leading the league for completed passes at more than 80 percent accuracy, also contributing two goals, five assists and a whopping 239 ball recoveries in an exceptional debut season in the A-League.
Stefan Mauk (Adelaide United)
The 20-year-old made the mid-season switch from Melbourne City to the Reds and seemed to go to a new level in the City of Churches.
Mauk provided the energy and extra drive to Adelaide’s midfield on their way to the A-League title, finishing with seven goals and four assists from his 25 appearances.
Rewarded for his stellar campaign with a call-up to the Caltex Socceroos squad for this month’s friendly with England.
Aaron Mooy (Melbourne City)
What more can be said about Mooy, who has developed into one of the most influential players in the A-League over the last 18 months.
He was imperious in the heart of City’s midfield this season, forging a deadly combination with Bruno Fornaroli and Harry Novillo which saw City break all sorts of scoring records.
Individually, the 25-year-old scored 11 goals and provided a staggering 20 assists to go with his all-round brilliant performances.
Diego Castro (Perth Glory)
No surprise to see the former La Liga star in this category given the impact Castro had in the west.
After taking a few games to settle in his new surrounds, the 33-year-old took the A-League by storm, scoring 13 goals and having four assists from 26 games.
The Johnny Warren medallist’s class and skill was a pleasure to watch, while his ability to find pockets of space in the front third made him a nightmare to defend against.
Mitch Nichols (Western Sydney Wanderers)
The 27-year-old playmaker rediscovered his best form under Tony Popovic this season.
Always supremely gifted, Nichols added consistency to his performances and his creative flair made the Wanderers a dangerous outfit.
He played all 29 games for the season, scoring a career-best 10 goals sprinkled in with four assists to make him one of the best performed midfielders for the campaign.
Marcelo Carrusca (Adelaide United)
Arguably the best playmaker in the A-League, Carrusca enjoyed another fine season in Adelaide.
The 32-year-old has that rare ability to look like he’s coasting through a match, only to produce something spectacular in the blink of an eye.
After being left out of the Reds side early in the season, he responded like the star he is and scored five goals and had four assists as the Reds swept to the Premiership/Championship double.
Andreu (Western Sydney Wanderers)
Was another Spaniard to make his mark in the A-League this season. The 32-year-old was the master at controlling the tempo of games for the Wanderers and become a vital link player between defence and attack.
With almost 1600 completed passes at almost 85 percent accuracy, Andreu rarely squandered possession, while he was also good at breaking up opposition attacks with 57 tackles and 68 interceptions.
He also found the back of the net three times from his 27 appearances for Tony Popovic’s side.
Roly Bonevacia (Wellington Phoenix)
In a tough season for the Kiwi club, Bonevacia was their undoubted shining star.
The 24-year-old provided a few moments of magic throughout the season, including a couple of stunning goals – most notably long-range beauties against Adelaide United and Melbourne City.
Bonevacia finished with six goals for the season, had four assists and 32 successful dribbles but lacked the support from those around him for Phoenix to be a force.
