MARRONE IS THE MAN

Michael Marrone has headed Adelaide United into the last 16 of the Westfield FFA Cup.

The Reds defender connected powerfully with Danish winger Johan Absalonsen’s whipped corner in the 63rd minute of their tie with fellow Hyundai A-League side Newcastle to head beyond Jack Duncan.

It was just Marrone’s second goal for the club and first since Boxing Day 2015.

FIVE STAR VICTORY

Melbourne Victory have made an early statement ahead of the 2017/18 Hyundai A-League season.

The 2016/17 runners-up have hammered Brisbane Roar 5-1 at Perry Park.

Besart Berisha grabbed a brace with Mitch Austin, James Troisi and Mark Milligan also on the scoresheet.

Peter Skapetis netted a stunning late consolation for the Roar.
