Newcastle Jets will be hoping to recapture the magic of their biggest Hyundai A-League victory when they welcome Wellington Phoenix to McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday.
Eager to revive his side’s Finals Series ambitions, Clayton Zane designed the Jets to attack in Round 24 of the 2013/14 Season.
Emile Heskey, Joel Griffiths and Adam Taggart joined forces in a potent front three while Michael Bridges and Craig Goodwin offered scoring punch off the bench.
Heskey got the party underway with his first and only goal of the season and Griffiths doubled the hosts’ advantage immediately following the restart.
But the headlines were soon stolen by the youngest of the trio as Taggart set about making a statement to Caltex Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou.
The then 20-year-old improved his season haul to 13 goals with a well-taken brace and added three more over the final three rounds to sew up the Hyundai A-League’s Golden Boot.
Taggart’s incredible late-season run of 10 goals in 11 games was ultimately not enough to fire the Jets into the top six, but it did book him a seat on the plane to Brazil 2014.
