Hyundai A-League to break 1 million fan mark in record time

The Hyundai A-League is on track to break the 1 million crowd mark in record time when the competition resumes this weekend.

So far this season, 972,444 fans have flocked through the turnstiles in 68 Hyundai A-League matches.

Football Federation Australia (FFA) CEO David Gallop said the 1 million aggregate figure shows that the Hyundai A-League’s unique atmosphere continues to attract fans in record numbers.

“There’s nothing like the live buzz of an A-League match and hitting a new record is proof of the league’s continual growth,” said Gallop. “I thank each and every fan who has attended games this season.

“I am sure that the short break in the A-League has left fans ready for the second half of the season and the exciting run into the play-offs.”

Gallop also praised Australian audiences for making the AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015 such a runaway success.

“The crowds and TV ratings show the appetite for football in this nation,” said Gallop. “The diversity on show in our own backyard over the past fortnight shows how football can unite people from across the spectrum. It has been a fantastic festival and now the A-League joins the mix.”

With three crucial matches this weekend, the 1 million mark is expected to be reached when league leaders Perth Glory host third placed Melbourne Victory at nib Stadium on Sunday (kick-off 5pm local), faster than any of the Hyundai A-League’s previous nine seasons.

Kicking off the weekend’s split Round 15 is Josep Gombau’s Adelaide United against the Newcastle Jets at Coopers Stadium (kick-off 5pm local) on Saturday before attention turns to Graham Arnold’s first visit back to Gosford since he took charge of Sydney FC. The eagerly anticipated clash between the Central Coast Mariners and Sky Blues kicks off at 7.30pm local time.

Sunday’s showdown between Perth Glory and Melbourne Victory then rounds off the weekend’s fixtures.
