Hyundai A-League 2019 Grand Final date confirmed

Following discussions with Sydney FC, Melbourne Victory and Perth Glory overnight, Football Federation Australia (FFA) today announced that the Hyundai A-League 2019 Grand Final will be played on Sunday 19 May at Optus Stadium in Perth (Kick-Off 4:30pm AWST).

FFA Head of Leagues, Greg O’Rourke, thanked the clubs for supporting the confirmation of the match date in light of the fact that both Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory have AFC Champions League (ACL) fixtures on Tuesday 21 May and Wednesday 22 May respectively.

“With the Federal election scheduled for Saturday 18 May, it was agreed by all parties that it is in the best interest of the competition to schedule our show piece event on Sunday 19 May to allow for maximum visibility,” said O’Rourke.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sydney FC in particular for the manner in which these discussions were had and we understand the extraordinary efforts that they are making to accommodate this decision given their short turn-around time between matches.

“In return, FFA has agreed to provide additional assistance to Sydney FC, should they qualify, to upgrade the travel class of players that will need to back-up for the ACL after playing in the Hyundai A-League 2019 Grand Final.

“We have structured the ticketing for this event to be very family-friendly and with a 4:30pm kick-off time we are expecting a very large vocal crowd to be in attendance for what will be another memorable Hyundai A-League Grand Final,” concluded O’Rourke.

Sydney FC CEO, Danny Townsend, acknowledged that this was a unique situation given the circumstances.

“At Sydney FC we take our representation in the AFC Champions League very seriously and are proud to be representing Australia on an international stage,” said Townsend.

“Our intention is to field the strongest squad possible for the Match Day 6 fixture against Kawasaki Frontale on the Tuesday night.

“However given the Hyundai A-League Grand Final clashes with the federal election, we accept the necessity to move our domestic showpiece to the Sunday afternoon, should we qualify.

“Whilst our preference was to play Saturday night, we understand the need to maximize the audience for the Grand Final and want to support the Hyundai A-League and football in this country in the best way we can,” concluded Townsend

Sydney FC will host Melbourne Victory at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Sunday (12 May 2019) to see who will face Perth Glory in the Hyundai A-League 2019 Grand Final.
