THE Olyroos are in control of their own fate heading into the final group stage fixture of the Tokyo 2020 Men’s Football Tournament against Egypt on Wednesday night.
Australia have three points on the board after securing victory over Argentina in the first game of the group stage. Defeat to Spain was to follow, leaving Graham Arnold’s side in need of a point or more against Egypt to progress to the knockout phase.
Seven of the 11 players used in Australia’s starting XI against both Spain and Egypt featured in the 2020/21 A-League campaign. With Mitchell Duke, Riley McGree and Nathaniel Atkinson all suspended after picking up two yellow cards, opportunities may arise for fringe A-League Olympians to break into Arnold’s side to take on Egypt on Wednesday night.
Australia’s upcoming opponents have just one point after drawing 0-0 with Spain and losing 1-0 to Argentina.
