THE Matildas face a stern Quarter Final test in unbeaten Great Britain, with a spot in the final four at the Tokyo 2020 Women’s Football Tournament going on the line on Friday night.
A goalless draw with United States on the final day of group stage action helped Australia progress to the knockout phase of the competition as one of the two highest third-place finishers. The result set up a meeting with Great Britain who topped Group E on seven points garnered from two wins and a draw.
Five Matildas who starred throughout the 2020/21 W-League campaign helped Australia progress to the Quarter Finals. Clare Polkinghorne and Tameka Yallop made three consecutive group stage starts, Teagan Micah kept a clean sheet in her second 90-minute display of the tournament against United States and Emily Gielnik joined Kyra Cooney-Cross in emerging from the bench in all three group fixtures.
There’s nowhere to hide and no second chances as the tournament heads into the knockout phase. With eight teams left, the Matildas will hope to hand Great Britain its first loss of the competition to progress to the Semi Finals, where three of the four teams remaining will head home from Tokyo 2020 as Olympic medalists.
The Matildas need the support of the nation behind them as they head into battle with Great Britain. Read on below to find out how you can watch all of the action as the Quarter Finals kick off on Friday night!
