How to watch: Matildas face giant-killers Sweden in Olympic blockbuster

THE excitement is building as the Matildas look to keep their perfect record at Tokyo 2020 alive with a second win in as many games, facing off with high-flying Sweden on Saturday, July 24.

Australia emerged 2-1 winners against New Zealand on July 21, with Tameka Yallop – a star of Brisbane Roar’s 2020/21 Westfield W-League campaign –  scoring the first of two Matildas goals.

Yallop’s fellow 2020/21 Brisbane teammates Clare Polkinghorne and Emily Gielnik both featured in the 2-1 win, as did Melbourne Victory’s Kyra Cooney-Cross in a 15-minute cameo off the bench.

Before Australia inflicted defeat on New Zealand in the second Group G fixture, Sweden met with world number one United States, dealing the nation a shock 3-0 loss. The result sent Sweden ahead of Australia on goal difference alone at the top of Group G.

Australia, meanwhile, sit second above both United States and New Zealand. Victory won’t come easy against Sweden; a typically stringent side with 10 clean sheets from their last 13 games. But with the likes of Sam Kerr, Caitlin Foord and Kyah Simon joining Gielnik and Yallop in offering serious firepower going forward for the Matildas, a three-point effort is more than possible for Tony Gustavsson’s side eager to impress at Tokyo 2020.
