How Melbourne City’s invincibles compare to previous unbeaten campaigns

It was an all-conquering regular season campaign for Melbourne City as they wrapped up the Westfield W-League Premiership title without defeat– but how does it compare to other unbeaten runs?

City won 11 and drew once in their 12 matches on the road to the Premiers title and finished 11 points clear of their nearest challenger, Melbourne Victory.

On the way they netted an impressive 27 goals – at an average of 2.3 goals per game – while shipping a miserly four goals at the other end of the pitch.

They did it by bossing their opponents on the ball with an astounding 64.3% share of possession throughout the campaign, and 7,250 passes at 83.3% accuracy.

It’s a return that mirrors their inaugural Westfield W-League season in 2015/16, when the competition newcomers won all twelve games on their way to the Premiership, before continuing the run to their first Grand Final triumph.

While this year’s campaign compares amongst the best ever in the Westfield W-League, it also puts Rado Vidosic’s side in some impressive company from around the football world in recent years.

In the 2017/18 season, Chelsea delivered an impressive 18 match unbeaten season (13 wins and five draws) as they stormed to the English Women’s Super League title.

While the season prior it was Manchester City that soaked up the plaudits as they won their first English Women’s Super League silverware on the back of a 16 match unbeaten season (13 wins and three draws) – and, like their Melbourne sister club, they did it by conceding only four times.

There have also been some stunning undefeated seasons in men’s competitions in recent times.

In 2018/19, Greek Super League club PAOK FC completed a 30-game unbeaten campaign (26 wins and four draws) on their way to the title – conceding less than a goal every two games in the process.

While in 2016/17, Celtic tore up the Scottish Premiership by winning 34 of their 38 games (four draws) as they notched a sixth-straight top flight title on the back of an amazing 106 goals scored.

And let’s not forget the Juventus side that became the first to complete a 38-game Serie A season without defeat in 2011/12 with 23 wins and 15 draws.

But while the statistical virtues of each team can be argued one thing certainly cannot – City’s outstanding season has put them among elite company in the history books.
