Hopkins sets Westfield W-League record

Melbourne Victory’s Jeff Hopkins has made Westfield W-League history – notching his 49th win as a head coach in the competition.

Hopkins’ side delivered their coach the milestone with a composed 3-0 win over Canberra United at Lakeside Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The win means Hopkins passes Alen Stajcic (48) as the coach with the most wins in the competition.

Last season, Hopkins guided the Victory to their maiden Westfield W-League Premiership title. It was his second league title in the competition after coaching Brisbane Roar to the Westfield W-League Premiership-Championship double in the 2008/09 season.

Hopkins was a former Welsh international as a player and was head coach of the Roar in the Westfield W-League’s inaugural season.

The record-breaking win for Hopkins on Sunday was the fourth on the bounce for the Victory and lifts then into the Westfield W-League top four to remain contention for this year’s Champions title to add to his impressive resume.

Hopkins told melbournevictory.com.au that he feels his side are hitting form at the right time in the season.

“We need to win games, we need to get more players forward, we need to create more chances and we’re starting to do that now so really pleasing.”

The Victory’s next challenge is a Melbourne Derby showdown with league-leaders Melbourne City following the international break.
