Holman: Sloppy Roar must improve quickly

Brett Holman says Brisbane Roar must fix their deficiencies quickly or risk further Hyundai A-League heartache following a drubbing at the hands of Newcastle Jets on Sunday.

A lacklustre Brisbane were put to the sword by Mark Jones’ rampant Jets who ran out 4-0 winners in front of more than 8000 fans at McDonald Jones Stadium.

“They were just sharper than us,” an honest but disappointed Holman told Fox Sports.

“The first half it was pretty much equal. We gave away a silly goal when we took a little bit of a risk at the back, they sneak in and it’s a terrible own goal. You can’t do anything about it.

“Their keeper [Jack Duncan] then makes a great save with Tommy Oar’s [shot].

“I thought we dominated in the first half with the possession but the second half we lost our way and they were deadly on the counter attack.”

Jack Hingert’s own goal was the difference between the sides in the first half before Nigel Boogaard, Steve Ugarkovic and former Roar midfielder Devante Clut completed the rout after the break.

John Aloisi’s side did produce some promising build-ups but were often let down in the front third, with Holman admitting it will take time for their attack to gel.

“It’s still early days,” the ex-Caltex Socceroo said.

“To put a finger on it is difficult. It’s working well but it’s just that last little bit or that last pass which just isn’t sharp enough.

“We have to fix it pretty quick or we’re going to cop a few more results like this.”
