History beckons for McKay

Prodigal son Matt McKay says he is delighted to be back in the Brisbane Roar fold and is prepared to make history with the club in Sunday’s Hyundai A-League Grand Final.

The Socceroos midfielder was a driving force behind Brisbane’s first title win in the 2010/11 campaign, but was not present for the second triumph a year later as he tried his luck in European and Asian football.

It was viewed as a huge coup for the club when they re-signed the fan favourite on a two-year contract at the start of the current campaign and the 31-year-old immediately got back into the swing of things to once again become an integral player in the Roar line-up.

Ahead of the Brisbane’s third Grand Final in four years, McKay spoke of his excitement at being involved with his hometown team once more.

“I’m delighted to come back to this club after the success we had when I left,” he said.

“So to replicate that and be in another Grand Final, and being at Suncorp, I think that’s special to get out there in front of the Queensland fans.”

McKay said with all Brisbane’s success in recent years, supporters of the club have become greedy for more, and that sits just fine with the players.

“We’ve got expectation now on us, the third Grand Final in four years, and all being at Suncorp is special, and our fans expect that now,” he said.

“It’s a high expectation and we thrive on that, having that belief in ourselves that we can make deciders and create history.

“We’re really looking forward to Sunday and that will hopefully help the fan base in the future.”

The two previous HyundaiA-League finals held at ‘The Cauldron’ have resulted in drama-packed Brisbane wins and McKay is expecting more of the same this time around.

“You’ve got to be ready for anything,” he said.

“It is a special occasion, I always get jealous when I see Origin and stuff like that with the 50,000, so to have 50,000 there again is going to be special and everyone’s really excited.

“It’s another day in Brisbane Roar history where hopefully we can get that third title in that nine-year period.”
