Heartbreak for Jets as City into finals

Melbourne City defeated Newcastle Jets 2-0 in Coffs Harbour to earn the fourth and final Westfield W-League finals ticket.

In the opening minutes of the much anticipated mini-final match between Newcastle Jets and Melbourne City, it was the visitors who were the dominating team.

Flawless passing between City’s captain Steph Catley and Jess Fishlock threatened the Jets morale however they were unable to finish any chances in front of goal.

Newcastle found it difficult to hold possession failing to make their passes stick however managed to keep the score locked scoreless at half time.

In the second half, Newcastle provided more spark in attack with an early corner that headed just wide to the left of goal. Newcastle created a few chances, but it was City who took the lead in the 55th minute.

After a 50-50 aerial duel between Cassidy Davis and Teigen Allen, the ball deflected into the path of Erika Tymrak who went one-on-one with Katelyn Rowland. The Jets’ goalkeeper was drawn off of her line with Tymrak calmly slotting the ball into the bottom right corner.

The Jets tried to get themselves back into the game with the best chance falling to Rhali Dobson. Arin Gilliland chipped the ball over the Melbourne City’s defence and Dobson charged onto the pass going one-on-one with Lydia Williams but the strike went wide to the left.

City sealed the game in the 93rd minute after an effort from outside the 18-yard box from Amy Jackson. Striking the ball to the left, Rowland seemed to have the ball covered, however, the ball slipped through the hands of Newcastle keeper and into the back of the net.
