Grand Final preview: Sydney FC v Melbourne Victory

It all comes down to this: a monumental instalment of the Big Blue, set to determine the Champions of the 2020/21 Westfield W-League campaign.

It’s Navy Blue against Sky Blue, it’s Siemsen against Ayres, it’s De Vanna against Polias. It’s Sydney FC v Melbourne Victory in the Westfield W-League Grand Final, and it’s all set to go down on Sunday, April 11 at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium (kick-off 4.05pm AEST).

The Sky Blues are the Premiers, and the favourites on paper to lift a second piece of silverware in the space of 11 days. Ante Juric’s side beat Victory to the Premiers Plate on Wednesday, March 24 in a 2-1 win over Jeff Hopkins’ Victory, who were forced to settle for third on the table instead of climbing to the very top.

But Victory bounced back in the Semi Finals, banishing a disappointing end to the regular season to thump Brisbane Roar 6-2 on the way to booking their place in the Grand Final. Melina Ayres scored three and Lisa De Vanna scored two as Victory impressed all over the park in a confidence-boosting display.

The Sky Blues were similarly impressive in a Semi Final meeting with Canberra United on Monday, April 5. The Green Machine came into the contest without star striker Michelle Heyman leading the line, and Sydney took full advantage to breeze to a comfortable 3-0 win.

Ally Green scored a 30-yard screamer to send her side three goals ahead and put an exclamation point on her side’s composed performance under pressure.

First there were nine, then there were four, and now just two sides remain in the hunt for the ultimate goal in the 2020/21 Westfield W-League campaign.

The Sky Blues will take confidence from their 2-1 win over Victory in Round 14. Teresa Polias and Princess Ibini scored Sydney’s two goals on the night, as Kyra Cooney-Cross put in a mere consolation for Victory deep into stoppage time. But will the heartbreak of conceding the Premiers Plate to a bitter rival fuel Melbourne’s fire? Will Round 14 failure inspire Grand Final success?

There’s only one way to find out. Tune in to the 2020/21 Westfield W-League Grand Final, and watch the sparks fly between these two old foes in an unmissable Big Blue destined for the history books!
