Goodwin: I’ll be at home, here at Coopers

Although an Adelaide born player, the Red’s newest recruit, Craig Goodwin, has said he will easily feel at home when playing in front of home support at Coopers Stadium this season.

“Coming back to play professional football in South Australia is something I’ve always wanted the chance of doing,” said Goodwin.

“For a young boy, playing for the club you support is always a dream.

“I’ve taken the long route coming from Newcastle and being away from SA for the last four years, but I’m excited to be back and to get amongst the team so we can have a really successful season.”

After being officially revealed as a Red on Monday, Goodwin has already begun training with his new teammates and coach, Josep Gombau, says the 22-year-old looks certain to feature in the training match against Melbourne Victory on Friday.

“Craig is fit and he has been training with Newcastle, so he is ready,” said Gombau.

“We have brought him to the club because he is a versatile left-sided player that can play at both left-back and left-wing.

“Last season he played very well, but now the most important thing for him is to work hard and fight for his place in the team.

“He will still need time to adapt tactically to the style of football we play, but in terms of his physical condition he is ready to start playing.”

And Adelaide United’s tactical style of play is one of the main reasons for Goodwin’s move back to South Australia, after being impressed with the football Gombau has implemented into the club.

“The style of football that Adelaide played last season was very attractive and the attacking nature of the team is going to suit my personal game.

“I’ve heard great things about the club, but also about Josep and I am sure I will learn a lot from him and my teammates.”

Whilst the closed trial match against Melbourne Victory later today (Friday) is being deemed a training session, Gombau believes it is a great chance to continue trying new tactics ahead of the Hyundai A-League 2014/15 Season and ahead of the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 16 match against Brisbane Roar at Coopers Stadium on Tuesday, 23 September.
