Glory walkout due to ‘safety’ concerns

Perth Glory cancelled last night’s friendly with Sydney Olympic at Belmore Sportsground due to safety concerns, the club has said.

Perth arrived at the home of the NPL club last night but left soon after dissatisfied with their ability to prepare professionally for the match.

Glory is now heading back to Perth ahead of a meeting with La Liga powerhouse Malaga on Sunday.

On Glory’s Facebook page, the club issued a statement supporting the decision by coach Kenny Lowe to pull out of the friendly.

‘The decision not to proceed with the match was made by the Glory’s Head Coach and the Clubs coaching staff who were unable to safely prepare the team at the venue in order for the game to proceed.

“The Club wholeheartedly supports the decision made by its coaching staff. The cancellation at such a late time is highly disappointing particularly given all at the Club and at Sydney Olympic were keen for the game to proceed.

“The Club will not be making any further comment on the matter.”

Olympic coach Grant Lee said he was “baffled” by the decision when speaking with Perth radio’s 6PR.

Perth had been based in Sydney since last weekend where they played Adelaide United also at Belmore, losing 1-0.

Meanwhile a star-studded Malaga have touched down in Australia ahead of their two match LFP tour starting with the Reds at Adelaide Oval on Friday night. They then head to Perth to face Glory on Sunday.
