Perth Glory were unable to capitalise on a dominant first half full of good scoring chances to play out a 0-0 National Youth League draw with the Brisbane Roar at 6PR Stadium on Saturday.
The Glory came into the clash after impressive wins over Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United to begin the season and appeared set to make it a third straight victory at several stages in the first half.
However the Roar did well to hold on and are now also yet to lose in the opening three matches of the 2010/11 campaign.
The Glory dominated play in the opening half but through a combination of strong defending from the Roar and their in-form goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne, the scores remained deadlocked at 0-0 at the half-time break.
It wasn-t through a lack of trying from the Glory, though, who created chance after chance in a half of football that saw the home side in complete control but unable to put the score on the board.
Brisbane didn-t create a chance at all in the half, while Perth had at least eight chances that on any other day could have found their way into the back of the net.
The first came to Howard Fondyke in the sixth minute when Redmayne made one of a host of outstanding saves for the half.
Sebit Oyet then couldn-t take advantage of another chance, Andrija Jukic hit the crossbar on a shot he struck well and in the 16th minute an Oyet cross to Sahr Musa didn-t quite come off.
Cameron Edwards then shanked another opportunity just a minute later and Jukic’s long range shot just went over the crossbar in the 25th minute before the Roar finally settled and got some time with the ball in possession.
It didn-t translate to scoring chances, though, and towards the end of the half the Glory had a couple more opportunities with the best a header from Fondyke that was sensationally tipped over the crossbar by Redmayne to ensure the 0-0 half-time scoreline.
There were less chances created by both sides in the second half as neither side was able to break the deadlock.
The Roar were able to even up possession, though, and finally threaten to score with Matthew Thurtell coming on as a substitute and having two shots on goal that just didn-t manage to go into the back of the net. Captain Chris Bush also pushed a free kick wide.
The Roar replaced their goalkeeper at half-time with Nicholas Tubbs coming on and he also did well to keep out some decent Glory chances from Fondyke and Josh Risdon.
The Glory Youth travel to Canberra to take on the Australian Institute of Sport in a fortnight while the Roar host the Central Coast Mariners.
