Perth Glory coach Ian Ferguson admits his players were their own worst enemies in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sydney FC at the SFS.
The visitors were arguably the better side in the opening stanza but trailed 2-0 after 72 minutes as marquee man Brett Emerton scored one goal and laid on another to lead the Sky Blues to victory.
“Obviously very disappointed and I thought we played well in the first half and disappointed in the manner again that we lost goals, it was our own downfall,” Ferguson said.
“We had a throw in on the half-way line and we give it away and they hit us on the counter and score a goal from it, it’s very disappointing.”
“One of the things we spoke about was our throw ins, we’ve got to retain the ball and we didn’t retain the ball and we get punished for it.”
“It shouldn’t be happening, it’s crazy when you give away a goal like that. It’s very hard to come to a place like Sydney and try and get a result at the best of times but when you give easy goals away the way we did in that manner is a sore one.”
“And the second goal, we wanted our wing backs to track their wider players and we gave them too much time, he (Brett Emerton) delivers a cross and (Bruno) Cazarine’s got a free header into the net.”
“The first goal today was very crucial and we were obviously desperate to try and get that but we didn’t and obviously Sydney got it.”
The Glory, who had won three straight games heading into the Sydney FC clash, remain in fourth spot despite the loss.
And Ferguson is confident his charges can bounce back against the Newcastle Jets in Perth next Saturday.
“Yeah I hope so,” he said when asked if Saturday’s slip up was merely a blip on the radar.
“I just felt today a lot of things weren’t right with us and I just felt the decision making was poor and the passing was poor, but there was some nice stuff as well.”
“Next week is a big test for us and it’s all about character next week.”
“We’ve got a home game and I’m sure we’ll be up for it against Newcastle, it’s a big, big game for us.”
