Two time World Cup winner and current German captain Nadine Angerer has announced she will play in the Westfield W-League for the 2013/14 season.
Brisbane Roar have confirmed they have signed two time World Cup winner and current German captain Nadine Angerer for the Westfield W-League 2013/14 season.
The goalkeeper, who is currently leading Germany in the UEFA Women’s Championship, last week declared via Twitter she would play in the upcoming season before relocating to the US for their National Women’s Soccer League season.
“Hello everyone, from September I will play for one season in Australia. For which club I will announce next week,” she said.
Matildas and Roar midfielder Tameka Butt is thought to have played an influential role in the signing, having played a season with the four-time European Championship winner at FFC Frankfurt.
The 34-year-old will become the second German and World Cup winner to play for a Westfield W-League team, with compatriot Ariane Hingst having represented Newcastle Jets and Canberra United. Hingst has not yet confirmed whether she will be returning to Australia for another season.
The news is a massive coup for the Westfield W-League, as German players have traditionally been reluctant to play outside of their domestic league, the Frauen Bundesliga. Angerer joining the growing list of imports set to play in the upcoming eight team competition.
