With Adelaide United’s attack finally starting to click, left-back Ben Garuccio admits the Reds believe they can beat any team in the Hyundai A-League right now.
Marco Kurz’s side has scored eight goals in back-to-back wins over the last fortnight, including a 5-2 demolition of high-flying Newcastle Jets.
It’s given the side a chance to fight for a top-four finish over the final two rounds, with away clashes against champions Sydney FC (on Sunday) and Western Sydney Wanderers in Round 27.
The Reds are currently two points behind fourth-placed Melbourne Victory.
“We’ve got these last two games with everything to play for. We’re in the finals but we’re looking for that top four spot,” Garuccio told www.a-league.com.au.
“That’s our aim. We want to give the fans the opportunity to come support us one more time this year. They [the home fans] push us.
“For me, the team right now it’s the best we’ve felt all year, just as a unit, we’re feeling really tight,” the left-back added.
“We’re really hard to break down and we’re potent down the other end. That’s very important.
“100% we feel we can beat anyone and there’s no reason why we can’t go there and beat Sydney.”
Adelaide’s upsurge in form has coincided with the return to full fitness of Danish winger Johan Absalonsen.
The Reds haven’t lost when Absalonsen has started this season, but injury has meant the 32-year-old has made just nine appearances all season.
But he’s still contributed six goals and four assists in that time.
“He makes my job really easy. It’s unbelievable when you have someone like that playing on your wing,” said Garuccio, who plays on the same flank as Absalonsen.
“You just give the ball to him and he’s basically doing the rest at the moment. His stats speak for themselves.
“He’s flying…hopefully we can keep him fit and firing. He’s a great guy, very relaxed off the field and he gets on with all the boys well.”
Garuccio is also starting to hit peak form for the Reds and scored his first goal of the season with a powerful strike in the 3-1 win over Wellington Phoenix last weekend.
“It took me a while…50-odd games for Adelaide United now,” the 22-year-old joked.
“It was a top feeling, especially to score at Coopers [Stadium] in front of my family and friends made it even more special.”
