Former Socceroo, EPL and Sydney FC midfielder Richard Garcia has signed for Minnesota United in the North American Soccer League (NASL) for their Spring season.
The club, which has won their first four games to open the season, announced the signing of the 32-year-old overnight. Garcia will join former Sky Blues teammate Tiago Calvano, pending being able to gain the requisite visa permit.
In a statement released on the Minnesota United club website Garcia expressed his delight at securing the move and looked forward to linking with Calvano.
“This is a great opportunity for me to continue playing uninterrupted from the A-League season, and I am very excited to join Minnesota United FC with the goal to help the club secure a spot in the NASL Championship,” said Garcia.
“I have been paying close attention to the team from Australia and am pleased that the club has set a high standard securing the full twelve points so far in the NASL Spring season.
“I expect my transition to be much easier after playing with Tiago at Sydney this past season and I cannot wait to join my teammates and look forward to meeting everyone in Minnesota.”
Garcia has made 18 appearances for the Socceroos and was a part of Australia-s 2010 World Cup squad, as well as playing a part in qualification for next month’s tournament in Brazil. The journeyman spent over a dozen seasons playing in England, including two season-s in the top-flight with Hull City.
The versatile midfielder has played the last two seasons in the Hyundai A-League with Melbourne Heart and Sydney FC respectively, netting six goals in each campaign.
