Adelaide United goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic wants to remain a Red despite speculation he’ll be headhunted by the Hyundai A-League’s incoming second Melbourne team.
Galekovic is out of contract at the end of the season and is sure to be of interest given his Melbourne roots and fantastic form over the last few years.
Last season he was named the Hyundai A-League’s goalkeeper of the year, was United’s club champion, an influential member of the team’s Asian Champions League campaign and played two matches for the Qantas Socceroos.
A lack of opportunities with Melbourne Victory saw him move to Adelaide late in 2007 and the decision has paid dividends.
Galekovic said he was happy to remain at Hindmarsh Stadium.
“I’m still under contract with United and that’s about it. I’m still here and I’d like to stay here,” he said.
Meanwhile, Galekovic said Adelaide won’t be taking Newcastle lightly on Monday despite the Jets’ three-game losing streak ahead of the clash.
“On the results (Newcastle is) not so good but they are a very good team, you look at their last three games, the possession they’ve had, how many shots on target and how many shots they’ve had on goal, they’ve had a lot more than the opposition, they just can’t find the back of the net,” he said.
“Hopefully they don’t do it this week.”
“I’d love to keep another clean sheet and not have to do much work and get the three points.”
It’s already a high-stakes contest for both teams, which can keep in touch with the competition frontrunners with a victory, but the presence of Jets defender Ang Costanzo could add some extra spice to proceedings.
Costanzo is a former leader of the Reds but fell out of favour last season.
“He’s a good lad and I’m pretty sure he’s going to bring a lot of Newcastle supporters down to Adelaide,” Galekovic said.
“He’s experienced, he’s played a lot of years in the A-League and the NSL so he’s got all that and he’s looking to do well against his old team.”
