Fury score first win

Hyundai A-League new boys North Queensland Fury have recorded their first ever victory after they defeated Adelaide United 3-2 at the Darwin Football Stadium in a trial match on Thursday night.

Hyundai A-League new boys North Queensland Fury have recorded their first ever victory after they defeated Adelaide United 3-2 at the Darwin Football Stadium in a trial match on Thursday night.

Jason Spagnuolo opened up the scoring for North Queensland in the 15th minute and Fred Agius doubled its advantage seven minutes later.

Joe Costa pulled one back for Adelaide after 40 minutes and Alemao squared things up at 2-2 five minutes after half-time.

However, Agius struck again with half an hour to play and the Reds weren’t able to find an equaliser.

Fury defender John Tambouras said his team was rapt with the result.

“Obviously beating Adelaide here in Darwin was what we needed and we-ll go back to Townsville and get ready for the 8th of August against Sydney (in the season opener) – we-re looking forward to it,” Tambouras told www.northqueenslandfc.com.au

“It was great to come out of the tunnel and see the crowd and hopefully we can get a few more games up here because the atmosphere was fantastic.”

Conversely, Adelaide coach Aurelio Vidmar expressed his disappointment with his team’s performance in the Top End.

“We need to go and do a fair bit of work. Even though we had players missing, that’s no excuse,” Vidmar said.

“Some of the basics were poor, sure the conditions were tough but that’s all a part of what we’re going to get confronted with in the Hyundai A-League.”

“We need to get together again as a group, get back to training and start getting the basics right.”

“We just need to regroup, get everyone fit and on the park and continue moving forward.”

The Reds first game of the season is against Perth at Hindmarsh Stadium on August 7.
