Friday night preview: A-League, May 21

Brisbane Roar will look to fend off challengers for sixth spot on the A-League table when travelling to face Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium on Friday, May 21.

Brisbane are sixth on goal difference alone heading into Matchweek 22, with both Western Sydney Wanderers and Perth Glory locked on 31 points with the Queenslanders. The Roar are on a three-game winless run after losing 1-0 to Adelaide United last time out, but will be confident of snapping that streak with a clash with the bottom-placed Jets on Friday night.

Roar captain Tom Aldred is in contention to return from injury having been named in Warren Moon’s extended squad to face the Jets, while Josh Brindell-South misses out after suffering a dislocated shoulder against the Reds.

Newcastle skipper Nigel Boogaard limped off in his side’s last hit-out against Central Coast Mariners, but Jets boss Craig Deans has alleviated any fears of his central defender missing the Roar clash – he’s been named in the squad along with the returning Jordan O’Doherty.

The Jets are winless in two prior clashes with the Roar this season – Brisbane notched a 2-1 win in Matchweek 4 before the two sides drew 0-0 in Matchweek 8.
