Franjic open to Hyundai A-League loan

Socceroo defender Ivan Franjic says he is open for a return to the Hyundai A-League after the Asian Cup.

Franjic is currently playing in Russia with Torpedo Moscow but has struggled for consistent football since making the move last August.

New salary cap rules regarding loan players could allow Franjic to head elsewhere during the January transfer window, especially as the Russian league is on hiatus until March for a winter break.

And Franjic revealed a loan deal to the Hyundai A-League until the end of the season could be on the cards.

“I might go out on loan after the Asian Cup and the A-League would definitely be an option, a very big option,” Franjic told the Herald Sun newspaper.

“Maybe come home for four months, re-energise, get my body right then next season when my body’s really good….go back to Russia.

“I haven’t spoken to any clubs. My agent will speak to clubs and see who can fit me into the salary cap.

“They (Torpedo) rang me and want me back. I’ll speak to the coach.’’

For now though Franjic is very much focused on the Asian Cup and securing a starting spot for Friday’s tournament opener against Kuwait in Melbourne.

Franjic and Aston Villa’s Chris Herd are vying for the right-back spot.

The pair have both failed to tie down regular starts at their club sides so it will be interesting which way coach Ange Postecoglou goes.

Franjic, who was part of the World Cup squad in Brazil, only managed to play the first match against Chile before being forced off with a hamstring injury, ending his tournament.

“Mentally and physically it was disappointing to go the way it did because I was probably in the best condition of my life,’’ Franjic said.

“After that assist for Timmy I got into the game and felt like it was only going to go up. But it’s only made me more hungrier and determined to do well at this Asian Cup.”
