Fox Sports ready for Westfield W-League debut

Fox Sports and ABC will both show a LIVE broadcast of the Westfield W-League match of the round this season, commencing with a potentially epic match-up on Sunday between Brisbane Roar and Canberra United.

It will be Fox Sports’ first broadcast match of their first full season covering the Westfield W-League, and sees the reigning champions visit the home of one of the competition’s most successful clubs.

The Fox Sports coverage on channel 505 will be part of a double header broadcast along with the Hyundai A-League match each Sunday afternoon at 2pm AEDT. ABC’s broadcast will also commence at 2pm nationally on ABC1.

Former Westfield Matilda defender, Amy Duggan (nee Taylor) – who collected 27 full international caps over an eight-year period until 2005 – will anchor Fox Sports’ Westfield W-League coverage, hosting a dedicated pre and post-match show each Sunday.

She will be joined each week by renowned women’s football commentator, Stephanie Brantz, who will take the calling duties alongside a rotating panel of experts, including several former Westfield Matildas.

The opening broadcast match brings two of the most successful clubs in Westfield W-League history. Both Brisbane Roar and Canberra United have won two titles apiece, and have squared off in countless epic encounters, perhaps most notably a 3-2 win for Canberra in the 2012 season decider.

The two sides include a litany of Westfield Matildas who featured in the team’s march to the quarter-finals of the recent FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada. Among them are the Roar’s Tameka Butt and reigning Asian Player of the Year Katrina Gorry, while United will field star goalkeeper Lydia Williams and prolific striker Michelle Heyman.

Match kick-off at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Sunday is 1pm local time.
