Robbie Fowler has starred in his Perth debut, scoring a goal and having a hand in three more as the Glory trounced Rockingham City 8-0 in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday night.

In front of over 2000 fans at the Lark Hill Sportsplex, Fowler struck in the 21st minute and created goals Steven McGarry, Michael Baird and Branko Jelic before coming off at half-time.

“It was not bad. These games are just about getting fitness and it’s been a long time since I’ve played so it’s good to get a run out. I felt alright but it’s early days trying to get myself fit,” Fowler said.

“We’ve got a few more weeks before the start of the season so I think the more games we have like this we’ll all be better for it.”

“It’s always nice scoring goals. It’s more of a confidence thing but as I said before these games are just about getting fitness and making sure no-one gets any injuries, so we’re all pleased thus far.”

Fowler played in behind strikers Jelic and Baird and it was a role he relished.

“These games are really just about getting fit so that position was just so I can run about a bit and let my legs loose and get some air in the lungs,” he said.

“I enjoy playing there and I feel as though I can play there, but come the start of the season the gaffer will know what team he wants to play and where he wants the players to play so we’ll just have to wait and see.”

With his team leading 5-0 at the break, Perth coach Dave Mitchell made a host of changes for the second half with a handful of youngsters getting a chance.

Jesse Makarounas netted a brace, while Hanafi Ghazali was also on target to complete the romp.
