Fowler departs Adelaide, two more sign on

Adelaide United have announced Westfield Matildas young gun Mary Fowler has been released by the club to pursue an opportunity overseas.

The talented striker, who turns 17 next month, has scored three goals in seven Westfield W-League matches for Ivan Karlovic’s side in the current campaign.

Cairns-born Fowler has been capped four times for the Westfield Matildas and was the youngest player at last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, but did not take the pitch for Ante Milicic’s side in the tournament.

She proved herself a dynamic attacking outlet in the AFC U-19 Women’s Championship last year, with four goals in the Asian youth football showcase. She also scored in her Westfield W-League debut earlier this season with a penalty against Western Sydney Wanderers.

Fowler has previously trialled with FA Women’s Super League clubs Chelsea, Manchester City and West Ham United in 2018.

“This is a great opportunity for Mary and something that can propel her career even further,” Karlovic told adelaideunited.com.au

The club also confirmed that Football South Australia NTC product, Ella Tonkin, and Adelaide Comets striker, Victoria Mansueto, have signed the remainder of the Westfield W-League season.

Mansueto scored six goals for the Comets in the NPL Women’s South Australia in 2019.

With an eye to the future, Karlovic said he is excited to see how the duo perform in the closing rounds of the season, with the eighth-placed Lady Reds out of Westfield W-League Finals Series.

“It’s disappointing to lose Mary, but it’s fantastic that we have been able to promote two quality South Australian talents in Ella and Victoria and we’re excited to see how they can complement our squad in the final games of the season.”

Adelaide next tackle Newcastle Jets in a rescheduled Round 9 fixture at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday, February 1.
