Four reasons why Melbourne City will win the Westfield W-League grand final

Melbourne City knows all about what to expect on Westfield W-League Grand Final day having featured in the last two deciders.

But they are likely to start slight underdogs on Sunday against Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium.

But anything can happen on the big day and we’ve come up with four reasons why it will be City celebrating again come Sunday night.

CHANCE TO MAKE HISTORY

This is Melbourne City’s third season in the Westfield W-League and their third successive grand final.

Having won the last two championships, City could become the first team in Westfield W-League history to make it three titles in a row.

They know what it takes to get it done on the final day of the season and have that extra bit of motivation to topple the Sky Blues.

PEAKING AT THE RIGHT TIME

It took a final-round 3-0 demolition of Newcastle Jets just to lock-up City’s spot in the Finals Series.

They followed that superb performance with another outstanding display to beat Premiers Brisbane Roar in the semis to show they are hitting their straps at just the right time.

THEIR TEAM IS FULL OF STARS

When it comes to big-game experience and international quality, there’s isn’t many better squads in the Westfield W-League than Melbourne City’s.

Westfield Matildas teammates Steph Catley, Alanna Kennedy, Larissa Crummer, Kyah Simon and Lydia Williams, combined with imports like Jess Fishlock, Jodie Taylor and Yukari Kinga make this a team which oozes class and the ability to get the job done on the biggest stage.

DEFENSIVE STRENGTH

There’s a belief that defence wins championships and City’s backline of Kennedy, Catley, Lauren Barnes and Rebekah Scott, in front of keeper Lydia Williams, is one of the best around.

Despite an inconsistent season from the team as a whole, City only conceded 15 goals all season and had six clean sheets, compared to just three for Sydney FC.

Could this prove the difference on Sunday?
