Signing news: In-form attacker pledges future to Glory

Another day, another key re-signing for Hyundai A-League leaders Perth Glory, who have tied down in-form attacker Joel Chianese.

Just a day after the club’s all-time leading scorer Andy Keogh re-signed at Glory, Chianese penned a one-year contract extension for Tony Popovic’s side.

It comes after a superb season from the 29-year-old, who has played a significant role in Glory’s rise up the ladder.

In 20 appearances in the 2018/19 Season so far, Chianese has scored four goals and provided three assists and providing plenty of threat with his pace.

“I’m really excited to be staying on board with a club I’ve warmed to year after year in a fantastic city,” Chianese told Glory’s official website.

“I have learned so much working under [Head Coach] Tony Popovic and the coaching staff this year and with the great players we’ve got together.

“I have grown a lot as a player and am probably in the best form of my career, so when the opportunity came up to stay on board, I had to jump at it.

“With this squad I think we can achieve a lot as a group.”

Chianese started his Hyundai A-League career with Sydney FC and has been with Glory since 2016 after a short stint in Malaysia.

After a couple of up-and-down years where he also battled injury, he has found his groove under Popovic to become a consistent performer.

“Joel is having a fantastic season,” Glory Football Director Jacob Burns said.

“He has taken his game to another level with his performances, contribution and the threat that he poses with his pace.

“He has established himself as a regular amidst stiff competition and really matured as a player under the detailed guidance and structure provided by Tony Popovic and the coaching staff.”

Glory have the weekend off in the Hyundai A-League before returning to action in Round 22 against Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium on Friday, March 15.
