Canberra United and Matildas goalkeeper Lydia Williams has landed in the United States after signing with the Western New York Flash for the upcoming NWSL season.
The two-time Westfield W-League goalkeeper of the year is likely to find herself propelled straight into the No.1 jersey after an ACL injury to the Flash-s incumbent shot-stopper Adriana Franch.
Williams will join fellow Matilda Sam Kerr at the New York club, becoming the sixth Aussie signed for the 2014 National Women-s Soccer League campaign.
“I-m really excited to be here, especially being able get involved with the club at the start of the season,” Williams told The Women’s Game.
“I-m looking forward to playing with a world-renowned team that has a history of appearing in championships.
“I-m really excited to see what the season has to hold and to play in front of an American crowd.”
This will be Williams- second stint of playing in the US, having played for the Chicago Redstars back in 2009.
It follows a successful season in the Westfield W-League where her Canberra United team finished the regular season at the top of the table.
A long-standing member of the national team, Williams was not included in next week-s Matildas training squad to be held at the AIS as she completed her signing.
The Matildas will face Brazil in two internationals in Brisbane next month as part of their Asian Cup defence preparation. The match on Sunday 6 April will be broadcast live and exclusive on ABC TV and tickets can be purchased by clicking here.
