Five key fixtures – E-League Match Day 2

The fight for the 2020 E-League Premiership heats up on Saturday, March 7 as all 11 sides resume battle to determine which side lifts the silverware this season.

Sydney FC have a commanding lead heading into the second and final Match Day of the 2020 competition after FUTWIZ Marko and FUTWIZ Jamie combined in Sky Blue to record an unbeaten start over the first six rounds of play to sit atop the E-League table on 16 points.

But Wellington Phoenix, Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City are all within striking distance of the league leaders heading into the last five rounds, making Match Day 2 an unmissable day of action with a guarantee of high-stakes drama – and here are the top five clashes of the day to mark in your calendar.

PREVIEW: E-League 2020 Match Day 2

Round 7 – Wellington Phoenix v Sydney FC

Sydney FC face their sternest test of Match Day 2 in their first fixture of the morning when they play the second-placed Wellington Phoenix.

Wellington’s duo of airbrn_ and Tundra HoneyBadger registered four wins and two losses on Match Day 1 to put themselves in second position.

An aggregate win over FUTWIZ Marko and FUTWIZ Jamie would take the Phoenix to within one point of the league leaders, and allow Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory – who are both starting Match Day 2 on 12 points alongside Wellington on the table – a chance to close the gap leading in to Round 8, where the Sky Blues have a bye.

Round 7 – Melbourne City FC V Brisbane Roar FC

If Brisbane Roar have any chance of winning the Premiers Plate, they need a result over City in the first round of Match Day 2.

Brisbane will start the day on nine points, three behind City, Wellington and Victory and seven points behind the Sky Blues.

NaylorAU and AussieFifaHD need the early result to haul the Roar back into title contention, but City will be hoping to send them crashing out of the race as they look to keep pace with Sydney FC.

Marcus Gomes and Saisanas had a mixed bag of results on Match Day 1 but are well within striking distance of the Premiers Plate if they act fast and secure an early win over Brisbane.

Round 8 – Western United FC v Melbourne Victory

The Victory head into Match Day 2 in the best position of any team to give Sydney FC a challenge.  They sit four points behind the Sky Blues but hold a game in hand heading into the last five rounds of play.

Sydney have a bye in Round 8, giving Victory the chance to either move to within one point of the top side or overtake them, depending on the results of Round 7.

Western United are mid-table, but Mo Zwed will have his work cut out for him against Match Day One Xbox Player of the Day N8_Dylan, who has won four of his five games to date.

Round 11 – Melbourne City FC v Melbourne Victory

Is there a better way to end an exciting tournament with a Melbourne Derby in the last round of Match Day 2?

With both sides heading into the last five rounds with the potential to win the Premiers Plate, this contest could become a winner-takes-all affair should both City and Victory out-perform Sydney FC in the rounds leading up to this fixture.

Expect this rivalry match to be of the highest intensity with neither side willing to end the regular season season with a loss.

Round 11 – Adelaide United v Sydney FC

Considering the ferocity of competition this season, Sydney FC go into Match Day 2 facing the likely scenario of being pushed by their rivals all the way until the final round to see if they have what it takes to claim the 2020 Premiership.

With Victory holding a one-game advantage over the Sky Blues their four-point lead could realistically be cut to one by Round 9, meaning FUTWIZ Marko and FUTWIZ Jamie will need to perform until the very last round if they hope to secure a third successive crown.

Adelaide United head into Match Day 2 in 8th position and, with just two wins to their name from their first six games, Sydney FC will be sniffing blood should it all boil down to the final round of the day to decide who will lift the Premiers Plate.
