FIFA 20: Hyundai A-League’s highest-rated players through the ages

The likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Andres Iniesta have reigned supreme as the top rated players in EA Sports FIFA series.

But what about the cream of the crop from the Hyundai A-League?

With FIFA 20 being released around the globe on Friday, September 27, we’ve taken a look back through memory lane at the top-rated players from Australia’s top tier, since the Hyundai A-League was first introduced in the 2008 edition.

FIFA 08

Middlesbrough and Brazil legend Juninho, who played for Sydney FC in 2007/08, topped the pile with a rating of 73 when the Hyundai A-League hit the popular EA Sports title for the first time.

His Sydney FC teammate Tony Popovic (72) was ranked next highest, along with Brisbane Roar’s Craig Moore. Melbourne Victory legend Archie Thompson was next with 70, while Travis Dodd and Danny Allsop both scored ratings of 69.

FIFA 09

Sydney FC once again boasted the highest rated player in 2009, with Caltex Socceroos forward John Aloisi coming in at 70.
Melbourne Victory’s Costa Rican playmaker Carlos Hernandez and Newcastle Jets’ forward Joel Griffiths came in next with ratings of 69, followed by Thompson (68) and Moore (68).

Another Australian international topped the pile a year later: Jason Culina of Gold Coast United (72).

Hernandez was next (69), with Culina’s Gold Coast teammate Shane Smeltz tabling an overall of 67. Thompson and Moore were rated 67 each, while Robbie Fowler, on the books of North Queensland Fury, also scored 67.

FIFA 11

FIFA 11 saw Hernandez eclipse Culina at the top with a rating of 72, and he was joined by Wellington Phoenix legend Paul Ifill.

Culina and Central Coast Mariners defender Patrick Zwaanswijk were both rated 71 – while a 29-year-old German midfielder signed to Brisbane Roar, Thomas Broich was rated 70.

Hernandez

FIFA 12

Harry Kewell was bestowed a rating of 75 when he signed for Melbourne Victory in 2011, making him the league’s best in the FIFA 12 edition.

Thomas Broich was upgraded to a ranking of 73 and Shane Smeltz, now plying his trade for Perth Glory, was 72.
Zwaanswijk was upgraded to a rating of 72, an overall he shared with Sydney FC’s Brett Emerton. 

FIFA 13

He is arguably the Hyundai A-League’s greatest arrival, and Alessandro Del Piero unsurprisingly topped the ratings in this edition with 76.

Next was Western Sydney Wanderers’ Japanese icon Shinji Ono with 72, while Melbourne Victory’s Marco Rojas and Lucas Neill came in next with ratings of 70.

FIFA 14

Ono was upgraded to a rating of 73 on the back of his wonderful debut campaign, but despite netting 14 goals in his first season for the Sky Blues, Del Piero entered FIFA 14 rated 70 overall.

Also posting ratings of 70 were Brisbane Roar’s Matt McKay and Orlando Engelaar of Melbourne Heart (City).

Alessandro Del Piero

FIFA 15

Out went Del Piero, in came Austrian front man Marco Janko at Sydney FC.

Janko posted a rating of 72 in FIFA 15 – the highest in the competition. Broich and Victory defender Mattieu Delpierre were next with 71, Besart Berisha (also of Victory) came at 70 overall.

McKay, new Melbourne City signing Robert Koren and Victory winger Khalfallah were all 69. 

FIFA 16

Current Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Aaron Mooy was playing for Melbourne City when he topped the FIFA 16 edition with an overall of 75.

His City teammate Bruno Fornaroli was next with 74 – tying him with new Perth Glory arrival Diego Castro and Delpierre. Berisha was 73, while Broich, Ben Khalfallah, Milos Ninkovic (Sydney FC), Roly Bonevacia (Wellington Phoenix), Tommy Oar (Brisbane Roar), Thomas Sorensen (Melbourne City), Luis Garcia (Central Coast Mariners).

Aaron Mooy

FIFA 17

There was a three-way tie between Ninkovic, Fornaroli and Castro – all rated 76 overall – on top of the FIFA 17 ratings.

Victory’s Kiwi flyer Marco Rojas scored 75, an overall he shared with new Brisbane signing Avraam Papadopoulos. 

Victory pair Berisha and James Troisi, scored 74, alongside Sydney FC striker Bobo.

Fornaroli surged to the top of the ratings a year later, with his overall of 76 edging Ninkovic (75).

The Serbian playmaker had company though – Bobo and Adrian Mierzejewski also tallied totals of 75, alongside Perth’s Castro.

FIFA 19

Keisuke Honda became the highest-ever rated Hyundai A-League player when he joined Melbourne Victory last season, tallying a rating of 78.

Victory teammate Ola Toivonen was next with 76, followed by Ninkovic and Castro on 75. Brisbane Roar’s French livewire Eric Bautheac scored 74, while Phoenix star Roy Krishna and Sydney’s Siem de Jong secured ratings of 73 each.

FIFA 20

Castro reigns supreme in the latest edition of the EA Sports title – but he’s not alone. The Perth Glory wizard is joined by new Western United arrival Alessandro Diamanti and Toivonen on a rating of 76.

Ninkovic is next on 75, while new Western Sydney Wanderers recruit Pirmin Schwegler joins Bruno Fornaroli on a rating of 74.
