FFA Cup wrap: Fornaroli nets stunner as Hyundai A-League clubs survive scares

And then there were eight.

The FFA Cup Quarter Finals have been decided after four massive games in the FFA Cup 2018 Round of 16 on Wednesday night.

Here’s a wrap of all the action.

Bonnyrigg White Eagles 1-2 Western Sydney Wanderers

Western Sydney Wanderers suffered another FFA Cup scare but ultimately proved too strong for Bonnyrigg in their 2-1 win over the White Eagles at Marconi Stadium.

Wanderers coach Markus Babbel had warned against complacency following the side’s Round of 32 scare against Hellenic AC, and when new German recruit Alexander Baumjohann opened his account for the club early on the Red and Black looked on course for the final eight.

But the recently relegated NPL NSW outfit dared to dream when Tynan Diaz brought the scores level with a sensational free kick early in the second half.

It was not to be for the White Eagles though, as a captain’s goal from Wanderers’ centre half Brendan Hamill steered the Red and Black into the quarter finals.

Lions FC 0-1 Adelaide United

Adelaide United banished their Perry Park hoodoo with a hard-fought win over Lions.

The Reds were famously beaten 2-1 by Redlands United at the same ground in 2016, but Craig Goodwin’s first half strike was enough for Marco Kurz’s men to emerge unscathed.

Goodwin eased Adelaide nerves after capitalising on Josh Brindell-South’s miscued clearance to fire home from close range on the cusp of half time.

That proved the contest’s decisive moment as the visitors withstood a barrage of second half pressure from the recently-crowned NPL QLD Premiers.

Former Brisbane Roar striker Jean Carlos Solorzano came closest for Lions when he thumped a second half header against the crossbar.

Melbourne City 1-0 Newcastle Jets

Bruno Fornaroli was once again the FFA Cup match winner for Melbourne City, who defeated Newcastle Jets 1-0 at AAMI Park.

Fornaroli had set up the clash with City’s Hyundai A-League rivals following his incredible last-minute winner against Brisbane Roar in the Round of 32.

And the diminutive Uruguayan dragged Warren Joyce’s side through once again after curling in a spectacular 55th minute strike.

Adelaide Comets 0-4 Heidelberg United

Heidelberg United are FFA Cup Quarter Finalists for the third time after brushing aside 10-man Adelaide Comets at Adelaide Shores Football Centre.

Quickfire early goals from Reuben Way and Alex Schiavo saw the Warriors establish a 2-0 half time advantage before the second half dismissal of Ibrahima Kamara made a thankless task nigh on impossible for the home side.

And the Comets were put to the sword by the NPL Victoria Premiers, who sealed passage to the final eight through Sean Ellis’ deadly finish and a late penalty from Tom Cahill.
